History of Chiropractic

Chiropractic care can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Writings from China and Greece written in 2700 B.C. and 1500 B.C. mention spinal manipulation and the maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain.

Hippocrates, the Greek physician, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C., also published texts detailing the importance of chiropractic care. In one of his writings he declares, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases".

In the United States, the practice of spinal manipulation began gaining momentum in the late nineteenth century. In 1895, Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in

Davenport, Iowa after successfully restoring the hearing of one Harvey Lillard through a series of specific spinal manipulations or "chiropractic adjustments."

Palmer was well read in medical journals, as he had been an anatomist and physiologist for many years prior to this and had great knowledge of the developments that were occurring throughout the world regarding anatomy and physiology. In 1897, Daniel David Palmer went on to begin the Palmer School of Chiropractic, which continues to be one the most prominent chiropractic schools in the United States today.

Throughout the twentieth century, doctors of chiropractic gained legal recognition in all fifty states. A continuing recognition and respect for the chiropractic profession in the United States has led to growing support for chiropractic care all over the world.

The research that has emerged from " around the world" has yielded incredibly influential results, which have changed, shaped and molded perceptions of chiropractic care. A report, Chiropractic in New Zealand published in 1979 strongly supported the legitimacy of chiropractic care and elicited medical cooperation in conjunction with chiropractic care. Later, a 1993 Manga study published in Canada investigated the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care. The results of this study concluded that chiropractic care would save hundreds of millions of dollars annually with regard to work disability payments and direct health care costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and the nervous systems, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Doctors of Chiropractic often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as spinal manipulation, also called chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile or restricted in their movement as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time.

In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.

Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate. Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patients condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the health care team.

What Causes Back Pain?

The back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. You can sprain ligaments, strain muscles, rupture disks, and irritate joints, all of which can lead to back pain. While sports injuries or automobile accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements for example, picking up a pencil from the floor can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain. Back pain can also directly result from disease of the internal organs, such as kidney stones, kidney infections, blood clots, or bone loss.

Manipulation as a Treatment for Back Problems

Used primarily by Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) for the last century, manipulation has been largely ignored by most others in the health care community until recently. Now, with today's growing emphasis on treatment and cost effectiveness, manipulation is receiving more widespread attention.

Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a safe and effective spine pain treatment. It reduces pain, decreases medication, rapidly advances physical therapy, and requires very few passive forms of treatment, such as bed rest.

In fact, after an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research federal government research organization recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most

conservative care first. And it recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.

Venti Chiropractic & Sports Health urges you to make an informed choice about your back care. To learn more about how chiropractic manipulation may help you, contact Venti Chiropractic & Sports Health today.

• Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain and that's just for the more easily identified costs.
• Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.

What To Expect?

Upon entering our office our receptionist will greet you and welcome you to the Venti Chiropractic & Sports Health family. We will request that you fill out our patient forms. This paperwork provides us with general information about yourself and your condition.

Consultation

Next you will have a consultation with Dr. Ventimiglia to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options. Your first visit is designed for your doctor to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine if chiropractic care can meet your goals.

Examination

After your consultation, your doctor will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes, range of motion, as well as some standard orthopedic and muscular examinations. Nothing will be done in our office without your consent.

Report of Findings

Once all the information and the examinations have been performed, your doctor will give you a report of findings to answer the three most popular questions:

1. Can you help me?
2. What do I need to do to get better?
3. How much will it cost?

After discussing your history, reviewing all information and testing performed, and answering any questions you may have, your doctor will discuss recommendations with you. If you have a condition that requires care from other providers, the doctor will tell you. If your doctor believes we can help you, we will recommend treatment and a wellness program specifically designed for you.

At Venti Chiropractic & Sports Health we know that a small amount of your time and money to care for your most important asset--your health--will be far less time consuming and expensive than trying to recover it. If you feel like you do not have the time or money to take care of yourself, please feel free to discuss this with our office. The last thing we want is for you to come to our office in crisis. So please, we encourage you to take your health very seriously. As the old saying goes, "if you don't have your health, you don't have anything." Unfortunately, too many people don't discover how true that statement is until it's too late.
